Recently Deleted photos on iPhone: how the 30 days work

Updated · 5 min read

When you delete a photo on iPhone, it moves to the Recently Deleted album and stays for 30 days. You can recover it from there during that time. Storage is freed after the photo leaves the album, which happens automatically at 30 days or when you empty it yourself.

Where is Recently Deleted?

Open the Photos app and find the Utilities section, which in many iOS versions sits at the bottom of the Albums view or the library. Tap Recently Deleted. Newer iOS versions ask for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode before showing it. Menu positions change, so search for "Recently Deleted" if you do not see it.

Each photo shows the number of days left before it leaves the album.

What else goes to Recently Deleted?

Videos, Live Photos and screenshots follow the same rule. All of them wait 30 days and show a countdown. While they wait, they still occupy storage on the device, and they count toward your iCloud storage if iCloud Photos is on.

Does the 30-day rule differ between iPhone models?

No. The window belongs to the Photos app, so an iPhone 11 and an iPhone 17 count the same 30 days. People often search for this by phone model, and the answer for every model is the same. What changes with the iOS version is the menu: newer versions lock the album behind Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode, and Utilities sits in different places. Search Photos for "Recently Deleted" if you cannot find it.

What does the 30-day clock look like?

Take a photo deleted on June 1. It shows close to 30 days left that day, counts down daily and leaves the album around July 1. A photo from a session on June 10 leaves ten days later. You can recover either one on any day before it leaves, and it returns to its place by date.

How do I recover a deleted photo?

The photo returns to the library in its original place by date. The same steps work in reverse to remove items sooner: Delete instead of Recover.

  1. Open Photos, then Utilities, then Recently Deleted.
  2. Tap Select, then tap the photos you want back.
  3. Tap Recover and confirm.

How do I recover many photos at once?

Open the album and tap Select. Tap the photos you want, or use the Recover All option at the bottom when you want everything. Confirm. Recovered photos return to their spots by date, so a month you regret deleting comes back in one move.

Why can't I find the photo I deleted?

  • It left the album after 30 days.
  • Someone emptied it, on this iPhone, on another device or on iCloud.com signed in to the same Apple ID.
  • It sits in the Hidden album, which is not a delete.
  • It was never in your library. A picture you only viewed in Messages or a browser is not in Photos until you save it.
  • You are signed in to a different Apple ID than the one that took the photo.

When is storage freed?

After the photo leaves Recently Deleted. Until then, the file still occupies space. This catches people who delete 3,000 photos, see storage unchanged and think the delete failed. Check the album and the day counters.

To get space back at once, open Recently Deleted, tap Select, then Delete All. Do this only after you are sure, since the photos are not recoverable afterward.

Where does each kind of photo end up?

Hiding is not deleting. The Hidden album keeps photos out of the main library view while they stay on the device and keep using space.

Let an app move it after you confirmedRecently Deleted, 30 daysYes, same as above

How do I empty it on purpose?

Do this when you have checked the list and need the space now. Otherwise do nothing: iOS clears the album after 30 days on its own.

  1. Open Photos, Utilities, Recently Deleted and authenticate.
  2. Tap Select.
  3. Tap Delete All, or tap individual items and choose Delete.
  4. Confirm. This cannot be undone from Photos.

What if I use iCloud Photos?

Then the album is shared. A photo deleted on one device moves to Recently Deleted on all devices signed in to the same Apple ID, and it leaves everywhere after 30 days. iCloud Photos syncs your library across devices, so a delete is a library-wide action. Read how to delete on iPhone and keep iCloud copies if you need to keep originals.

Can I recover photos on a computer?

If iCloud Photos is on, iCloud.com has its own Recently Deleted album with the same 30-day window, which is handy when your iPhone is out of reach. On a Mac, the Photos app has Recently Deleted in its sidebar as well. The window is shared across your devices, so a recover on any of them restores the photo on all.

What mistakes cause regret?

  • Emptying the album immediately after a big delete.
  • Assuming a full storage bar will drop at once.
  • Deleting on a shared Apple ID without telling the other person that the photo leaves their device too.
  • Forgetting the 30 days and finding the album empty when you need a photo from last month.

How do apps handle Recently Deleted?

Apps that delete photos ask iOS to do it, and iOS shows a confirmation. The photos land in Recently Deleted like any other delete. An app cannot empty the album for you. Rollmark, an iPhone app in development, follows that flow: it builds a let-go list, you review it, you confirm in the iOS dialog, and the photos wait 30 days. Its copy says "Move to Recently Deleted" and never "permanently delete". It also has a Free the space now screen with the steps above.

How do I see what Rollmark moved?

On the Marks tab, the card "Moved to Recently Deleted" counts the photos and shows a line such as "About X once Recently Deleted is emptied". The month recap adds a card saying space comes back after Recently Deleted, with a button to the Free the space now steps. Sizes are estimates from pixel dimensions, so the real figure differs. The safe delete page walks through the full flow.

What should I check before I empty it?

  • Scan the thumbnails once and look at the day counters for photos you may still want.
  • Confirm a second copy exists for anything irreplaceable.
  • Check whether someone else shares your Apple ID.
  • Ask whether you need the space today. If not, do nothing.

What changes with a long clean-up?

A big clean-up fills the album with many items, each on its own 30-day clock. If you delete in several sessions, the earliest items leave first. This is useful: you can see in the album which photos will vanish next week, and recover any that you now want to keep.

What if the photo is gone from Recently Deleted?

If 30 days have passed or you emptied the album, the photo is not in Photos any more. Check a backup: iCloud Backup or a computer backup if you made one, a shared album, or a message thread where you sent the photo. Without any of these, it is lost, which is why a final review before confirming matters.

Should I leave deleted photos in the album?

Usually yes. The album is a free safety net. The only reason to empty it early is storage: if the iPhone is almost full and you cannot install or update, then emptying makes sense. Otherwise, leave it and let iOS clear it at 30 days. You get a month to notice a mistake.

Does Recently Deleted use my iCloud storage?

Yes. While a photo waits in the album, it still counts toward your iCloud storage if iCloud Photos is on. A clean-up therefore lowers your iCloud total only after the 30 days end, or after you empty the album.
