How to delete photos from Messages on iPhone
Open a conversation, tap the contact name at the top, scroll to Photos, tap Select and delete the ones you do not need. For a bulk job, go to Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Messages and review photos and large attachments. Deleting in Messages does not touch copies saved to Photos.

Why do Messages photos matter for storage?
Photos and videos that people send you live inside the conversation. They take space there whether or not you saved them to Photos. Group chats that share holiday pictures for years can add up to several gigabytes, and the Photos app never shows that weight. This is why iPhone Storage can list Messages as a large item while your library looks reasonable.
How do I delete photos from one conversation?
Menu details differ a little between iOS versions. If you cannot find See All, scroll up and down in the thread itself and long-press a photo to delete it.
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top.
- Scroll to the Photos section and tap See All.
- Tap Select, pick the images and videos you do not need.
- Tap the trash and confirm.
How do I find the biggest offenders?
- Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and wait for the list to load.
- Tap Messages.
- Look at the categories such as Photos, Videos and Large Attachments.
- Open a category and swipe left on items, or tap Edit and select several.
- Confirm each delete.
Delete from the longest videos first. A single clip from a family chat can weigh more than a hundred photos.
Does this delete the photo from my library?
No. Messages and Photos are separate stores. If you tapped Save, or the photo was saved automatically by an app, a copy lives in your library and stays there. The reverse also holds: deleting from Photos does not remove it from the chat. If you want the copy to go from both, delete it twice.
What does Keep Messages do?
In Settings, Messages, Keep Messages you can choose to keep messages for 30 days, one year or forever. Shorter settings remove old messages and their attachments automatically. This frees space with no further effort, and it also removes the history. Use it only if you do not need old threads, and save the photos you care about to the library first.
How do I save the good ones before deleting?
Open the photo, tap the share button and choose Save Image. It joins your library with the date you save it, not the date it was sent, which can place it in the wrong month. If the month matters to you, open its info panel in Photos and adjust the date afterward. Sorting by month in Rollmark, an iPhone app in development, depends on the dates stored in your library, as the month-by-month sorting page explains.
What about photos I sent?
Photos you sent are stored in the conversation too, and they count. If you want to clear space, treat sent and received attachments the same way. A good test is whether you would look at it again. Many sent photos are already in your library, so deleting the copy in the chat loses nothing.
A 10-minute pass
- Open iPhone Storage, Messages.
- Delete the five largest videos you do not need.
- Skim the Photos category and delete memes, screenshots and duplicates.
- Open your busiest group chat and clear its media.
- Think about Keep Messages for the future.
How can I stop attachments from piling up again?
Set Keep Messages to a shorter period if you do not need history. Check Low Quality Image Mode in Settings, Messages, which sends smaller images from your phone and saves a little space on both ends. Delete big group-chat videos when the event is over. Habits help more than settings: look at the Messages entry in iPhone Storage once a month.
What about Messages in iCloud?
If you use Messages in iCloud, found under Settings, your name, iCloud, a delete in a conversation applies on your other devices too. That is useful for freeing space everywhere and risky if you delete the only copy of something. Save what matters to Photos or Files before you clear a thread.
How do I save the best media from a long thread?
This keeps the good ones in your library, where a monthly sorting pass can find them.
- Open the conversation and tap the name at the top.
- Go to Photos, See All, and tap Select.
- Pick the images you want to keep and tap the share button.
- Choose Save Images, and then delete the rest of the attachments from the thread.
Can I recover an attachment I deleted by mistake?
Possibly. Recent iOS versions keep deleted conversations and messages in a Recently Deleted area inside Messages for a limited time. Open Messages, tap Edit or Filters, and look for Recently Deleted. If the item is there, recover it. If your photo was also saved in Photos, check Photos too. After the window passes, the attachment is gone unless a backup holds it.
Does the other person lose the photo?
No. Deleting a photo from a conversation removes it from your phone, and your other devices when Messages in iCloud is on. The sender and everyone else in the thread keep their copies. That also means a photo you sent stays on their phones after you delete it from yours.
Why does Messages show a different size than Photos?
The two apps count different things. Photos counts your library, and Messages counts every attachment in every thread, including ones you never saved. A phone can show a small Photos figure and a large Messages figure at the same time. Trust both numbers and clear each one separately.
If storage is still full afterward, read why storage stays full after deleting photos, since Recently Deleted holds space for 30 days.
