Why is my iPhone storage still full after deleting photos?

Updated · 3 min read

Deleted photos stay in the Recently Deleted album for 30 days, and the space comes back only when they leave it. Other common reasons are large Messages attachments, videos you did not touch, and a storage bar that takes a moment to refresh. Check these five places in order.

Why did storage not drop after I deleted photos?

When you delete a photo in Photos, iOS does not remove the file right away. It moves the photo to Recently Deleted, where it waits 30 days so you can change your mind. The file still occupies space during that time. That is the most common reason for a storage bar that does not move.

How do I check Recently Deleted?

  1. Open Photos, tap Albums and scroll to Utilities.
  2. Tap Recently Deleted. On recent iOS versions it asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
  3. Each photo shows the days it has left.
  4. To free space now, tap Select, then Delete All or pick items and delete them. This step cannot be undone, so scan the grid first.

Emptying Recently Deleted is the only step here that cannot be reversed. Look before you tap.

Where else does the space go?

If Recently Deleted is empty and the bar is still near full, look at this list in Settings, General, iPhone Storage. iOS lists apps by size and often adds recommendations.

Why does the storage bar take time to update?

The list under iPhone Storage is calculated in the background and can lag behind what you just did. After a large delete, close Settings and open it again, or restart the phone and check once more. If the number still does not match what you expect, wait an hour and look again.

Does iCloud change the answer?

It can. With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage turned on, iOS keeps smaller versions on the phone and full-size files in iCloud. Deleting then frees only the small versions. With Download and Keep Originals, the full files are on the phone. A delete also syncs to every device on your account. The guide to deleting photos but keeping iCloud copies covers the choices.

What gives the biggest result fastest?

Videos. A minute of 4K video takes many times the space of a photo, so a handful of long clips can outweigh a thousand pictures. Sort the Videos album by looking at the duration of each clip and start with the longest. The guide on finding large videos on iPhone has a method.

Rollmark, an iPhone app in development, has a Pro pile called Large videos that lists videos estimated at 50 MB or more, biggest first. The sizes it shows are estimates from the video length, so treat them as about right, not exact. It moves nothing until you review a list and confirm in the iOS dialog.

What should I not do?

  • Do not delete apps to make room for photos you have not looked at. Review the heavy items first.
  • Do not empty Recently Deleted without a glance. It is the safety net for a mistake.
  • Do not turn off iCloud Photos to save space unless you have a copy of your library elsewhere.
  • Do not trust a single number. Compare the storage list before and after each step.

A quick checklist

  1. Open Recently Deleted and empty it if you are sure.
  2. Check the Videos album and delete the longest clips you do not need.
  3. Open iPhone Storage and read the recommendations.
  4. Clear large Messages attachments.
  5. Restart and recheck the bar.

How do I clear Messages attachments?

Menu names shift between iOS releases. If you cannot find the review screen, open a conversation, tap the name at the top and look at its photos.

  1. Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and tap Messages.
  2. Tap the review option for photos, videos or large attachments, depending on your iOS version.
  3. Swipe or tap Edit to delete the ones you do not need.
  4. Optionally open Settings, Messages and shorten Keep Messages. This removes old messages and their attachments, so use it only if you do not need the history.

What if the phone is full right now?

When you cannot take a photo or install an update, do the fastest things first. Delete one long video you have already backed up. Offload an app you rarely use, which removes the app and keeps its data. Remove downloaded shows or music you have finished. Each of these takes under a minute and can free a gigabyte or more. Then do the careful sort when you have time, not under pressure.

A worked example with invented numbers

Say your 128 GB phone shows 4 GB free. You delete 600 photos and 40 screenshots, which together weigh about 2 GB, and the bar does not move. Recently Deleted now holds that 2 GB. You empty it and the bar jumps to about 6 GB free. You then delete five long videos of roughly 1 GB each and reach 11 GB. The numbers are made up, but the pattern is real: the delay comes first, then the big wins come from video.

Frequently asked questions

How long do deleted photos take to free storage?

Up to 30 days, because they wait in Recently Deleted. Empty that album to free the space sooner.

Why does System Data keep growing?

System Data covers caches, logs and other items iOS manages. It changes on its own and often shrinks after a restart or an update.

Does deleting photos from iCloud free space on my phone?

A delete syncs across devices on iCloud Photos, so it removes the items from your phone as well. They wait in Recently Deleted first.

Is it safe to Delete All in Recently Deleted?

It is safe only if you have checked the contents. The action cannot be undone, so scan the album before you confirm.

What takes the most space on an iPhone?

Usually videos, apps and their data, and Messages attachments. Photos take less per item but add up in the thousands.
