How to back up iPhone photos before you delete them
Copy your library to a computer or an external drive before a big delete, then open a few files from the copy to check they work. iCloud Photos alone does not count as a backup, because a delete on your phone removes the photo from iCloud too. Keep at least one copy a delete cannot reach.

Why back up before a cleanup?
A cleanup is made of decisions, and some will be wrong. Recently Deleted gives you 30 days to recover, and after that the photos are gone. A separate copy extends that safety net from a month to as long as you keep the copy. It also protects against a lost phone, a failed update and the fat-finger delete that happens at the end of a long day.
Does iCloud Photos count as a backup?
It does not, at least not for deletes. iCloud Photos keeps your devices in sync, and sync means a deletion travels too. Delete a photo on your iPhone and it leaves your iPad, your Mac and iCloud, then waits 30 days in Recently Deleted. iCloud protects you against losing a device. It does not protect you against your own mistake. The longer explanation is in deleting photos on iPhone but keeping them in iCloud.
What are the options?
| Method | What you need | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mac import | A Mac and a cable or AirDrop | Full library with dates intact | Disk space on the Mac |
| PC | A cable and the Apple Devices app or your computer's file manager | Simple copy of all files | HEIC files may need a codec |
| External drive | A drive and a computer | A second physical copy | Keep it somewhere other than the computer |
| Another cloud | An account elsewhere | Offsite copy | Upload time and plan limits |
| iCloud Photos | iCloud storage | Sync across Apple devices | A delete syncs, so it is not a backup |
How do I copy photos to a Mac?
If you use iCloud Photos on the Mac, the originals are already there, but treat that as sync, not backup. Export a copy to a folder or drive too.
- Connect the iPhone with a cable and enter your passcode. Tap Trust if asked.
- Open Photos on the Mac and select your iPhone in the sidebar.
- Choose Import All New Items, or pick specific ones.
- Wait for the import to finish before you unplug.
How do I copy photos to a PC?
Apple's Apple Devices app on a PC can also help with transfers. Menu names change between versions, so follow what your screen offers.
- Connect the iPhone with a cable, wake it with your passcode and tap Trust.
- Open your computer's file manager and look for Apple iPhone in the list of devices, then Internal Storage and DCIM.
- Copy the folders to a drive on the PC.
- Set Settings, Photos, Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic if the files will not open.
How do I know the backup works?
Do a spot check. Open ten files from different years in the copy. Play one video from start to finish. Compare the file count on the copy with the count in Photos on the phone. If the numbers match and the files open, the copy is real. A backup you never tested is a hope.
How many copies is enough?
A common rule of thumb is the 3-2-1 approach: three copies of the data, on two kinds of storage, with one stored elsewhere. Wikipedia's article on backup describes the idea and the reasoning behind keeping a copy offsite. For photos, that could be your iPhone, an external drive at home and a cloud copy.
When do I start deleting?
After the backup passes the check. Then sort month by month and delete only after you review the list. Rollmark, an iPhone app in development, works this way: swipes add photos to a let-go list, the review screen shows them with estimated sizes, and iOS asks you to confirm before they move to Recently Deleted. The photos stay on your iPhone, and the app has no server to hold a copy. Backups are your job, which is why this step comes first. See safe delete.
What about videos and Live Photos?
Copy them too. Videos are the largest part of most libraries, and a Live Photo is a pair: a still and a short clip. Importing through Photos on a Mac keeps the pairing. A plain file copy into a folder on a PC keeps both files, and some programs show the still and the clip as separate items. That is normal.
How big a drive do I need?
Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and read the Photos figure, then add room for growth. Suppose Photos shows 80 GB. A 256 GB drive holds that and leaves space for a second year and a duplicate. A 1 TB drive gives years of margin. The figures are examples, so read your own and pick a drive with at least double that amount.
What if my photos are optimized in iCloud?
Then the phone may hold only smaller versions. To copy full-size originals to a computer, import through Photos on a Mac signed in to the same iCloud account, or switch the phone to Download and Keep Originals and wait for the download. Check that the phone has space for the full library first. A copy of small versions is not a backup of your originals.
How often should I refresh the copy?
Match it to how much you shoot. Someone who takes a handful of photos a week can refresh the copy every few months. A person who films events should copy after each one. Set a calendar reminder for the first of the month, and import only the new items so the job takes minutes. A stale backup protects the past and misses the last half year.
Should I encrypt the drive?
If the drive holds family photos and you carry it around, yes. Both Macs and PCs offer built-in drive encryption, and the cost is a password you must not lose. Store that password in a place other than the drive itself. A lost drive with encrypted contents is an inconvenience, while a lost drive full of readable photos is a different problem.
Frequently asked questions
Should I back up my photos before deleting?
Yes, if the photos matter to you. Recently Deleted keeps items for 30 days, and a separate copy lasts as long as you keep it.
Is iCloud Photos a backup?
It syncs your library across devices, so a delete on one device reaches the others. Keep a copy elsewhere.
How do I back up photos without a computer?
Use another cloud service, or iCloud storage in a way that keeps originals. A computer or a drive gives a copy a delete cannot affect.
How can I tell if my backup is complete?
Compare the number of photos and videos, then open a sample of files from different years.
