Are my photos on my iPhone or in iCloud? How to tell
Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Photos. If Sync this iPhone is on, your library is in iCloud and mirrored on the phone, either in full or as smaller versions. If it is off, the photos live only on the phone, unless you backed them up elsewhere.

How do I check if iCloud Photos is on?
That one switch decides almost everything else in this guide, because it controls whether a delete on this phone reaches your other devices.
- Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Look for Sync this iPhone. On means your library syncs with iCloud. Off means it does not.
- On older iOS versions, the same switch is called iCloud Photos under Settings, Photos.
What does Optimize iPhone Storage change?
With iCloud Photos on, Settings, Photos offers two modes. Optimize iPhone Storage keeps smaller versions of photos and videos on the phone when space runs short, and the full-size originals live in iCloud. Download and Keep Originals stores the full files on the phone as well. Apple's support pages describe both modes. In the first mode, opening a photo can show a brief download while the original arrives. In the second, everything is on the phone and nothing needs a network.
| Setting | On the phone | In iCloud | Delete effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud Photos off | Everything | Nothing from Photos | Local only |
| On, Optimize iPhone Storage | Smaller versions, some originals | All originals | Removes from all devices |
| On, Download and Keep Originals | All originals | All originals | Removes from all devices |
How can I compare the counts?
Scroll to the very bottom of the library grid in Photos. It shows a line such as the number of photos and videos. Check the same line on another device that uses your Apple ID, such as an iPad or a Mac. Matching counts mean the library is syncing. If the phone shows far more than the other device, uploads may still be running or are paused.
Why would syncing be paused?
Photos shows a status line at the bottom of the library, such as updating or paused. Common causes are Low Power Mode, a weak connection, a full iCloud plan or a restricted setting for cellular data. Apple's iCloud plan includes 5 GB of free storage, which a photo library exceeds quickly, so a paused status is often a storage message in disguise. Check Settings, your name, iCloud for the storage bar.
What happens when I delete a photo?
It depends on the switch. With iCloud Photos off, the photo leaves only this iPhone and goes to Recently Deleted. With iCloud Photos on, the delete applies everywhere, and the dialog says so. Photos wait 30 days in Recently Deleted on each device. See the longer walk-through in deleting photos on iPhone but keeping them in iCloud.
Is iCloud Photos a backup?
It is a sync service. It keeps your devices in step, and that includes copying your mistakes. A photo you delete on one device is removed on the others. For a backup you want a second copy that a delete cannot touch, such as a computer or an external drive. The guide to backing up iPhone photos before deleting lists the options.
Does it matter for sorting?
It matters for speed and safety. If photos are optimized, a full-size original may need to download before you can inspect it. Rollmark, an iPhone app in development, avoids the wait by showing iCloud-only photos as thumbnails, so you do not need to download the full file to decide. Nothing leaves your library until you confirm the iOS dialog, and with iCloud Photos on that delete reaches your other devices. See safe delete for the flow.
A quick audit in five minutes
- Check the iCloud Photos switch.
- Note the storage mode.
- Compare the bottom-of-grid counts on two devices.
- Open the iCloud storage bar and see how full the plan is.
- Decide where your second copy lives before you start deleting.
How do I keep photos on the phone only?
Switching it off without downloading first can leave you with only the small versions on the phone. Check free space before you start.
- Open Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos and turn off Sync this iPhone.
- Read the prompt. iOS offers to download your photos and videos or remove them from the phone, depending on the storage mode you used.
- If you were using Optimize iPhone Storage, choose the download option and make sure the phone has room for the full library.
- Wait until the download finishes before you do anything else.
How much of my iCloud plan do photos use?
Open Settings, your name, iCloud and look at the storage bar. It breaks the total into categories, and Photos is usually the biggest one. Tap Manage Account Storage for the exact figure. If the bar is nearly full, uploads may pause, which is the most common reason a library falls behind. Free space in iCloud by deleting things you do not need, or by moving to a larger plan.
What about a Shared Library?
iOS 16.1 added iCloud Shared Photo Library, which lets a group of people contribute to one library. Deleting an item from a shared library affects everyone who uses it. If you share a library with family, ask before you delete large sets, and check which library a photo sits in before you press the trash.
