Mark the one photo that holds the month

A mark is the single photo you would keep from a month if you could keep only one. Rollmark asks for it when a month is sorted, then collects the marks in a year grid. After a few months you have one chosen photo for each stretch of your life.

How do I mark a photo?

If you let go of every photo in a month, there is nothing to mark, and Rollmark says so.

  1. Swipe up on a photo in the deck, or finish a month and pick from the grid of kept photos.
  2. Choose the photo. A gold border and badge show the selection.
  3. Tap Mark this photo, or Skip for now if you cannot decide.

What is the Marks tab?

The Marks tab shows a 3 by 4 grid for the year you select, with up to four years in the switcher. A marked month shows its photo and short month name with a gold dot. An empty slot is dashed: a plus to start sorting, a crown icon if the month is sorted and unmarked. Future months are disabled.

What are the stat cards?

Below the grid are four cards: photos reviewed, shown also as about how many rolls of film (36 exposures each), photos moved to Recently Deleted with an estimated size, months sorted with how many are marked, and your best streak.

Where else does a mark appear?

The marked photo becomes the cover of its month card on the Months tab, with a gold chip in the corner. It is the large photo on the month recap, and it fills the center of the month share card. The Marks tab shows all of them together.

Why a mark instead of a storage number?

Many cleanup tools end with a figure for megabytes freed. A figure fades in a day. A photo you picked for October stays worth looking at. The mark gives each session a result you can keep, which is also what makes share cards worth sending.

How do I choose a mark?

Pick the photo that would stand for the month if it were the only one left: the one with the best light, the best people, or the best memory. It does not have to be the sharpest. If two photos compete, choose the one that brings the month back, even if the other is technically better.

The grid of kept photos is newest first. Photos you let go are not shown, so a mark can only come from photos you chose to keep.

Who is a mark for?

It suits people who dislike cleaning for its own sake and want each session to produce something. If your goal is a year you can look back on, twelve marks do that. If your goal is only free space, you can skip the mark every month and lose nothing.

What does marking October look like?

You finish the month, and the screen reads "Mark October 2026" with the line "Pick the one photo you would keep if you could keep only one." Your kept photos fill a grid, newest first. You tap one, a gold border and badge appear, and you press Mark this photo. The recap then opens with that photo as its centerpiece, and the Months tab shows it on the October card with a gold chip.

How does a mark compare with a Best of album?

By hand, you create an album such as "2026 Best of" in Photos and add one picture a month. That works, and you control the album. A mark needs no album upkeep: it appears on the Months card, the recap, the Marks grid and the share cards from a single choice. The mark does not create an album in Photos and does not appear in the Photos app.

How do streaks fit in?

The Months tab shows a gold flame and a line such as "6-day streak" when you sorted something on consecutive days, or a grey "Start a streak today" when you have not. A missed day restarts the count with no penalty message. The best streak is kept on the Marks tab.

How is this different from other swipe cleaners?

Swipe-based cleaners are common. Most finish with a figure for megabytes freed. Rollmark finishes each month with a choice, and the result is a photo, not a number. It also avoids scare language: no storage warnings, no countdowns and no fake system alerts.

Can I change a mark?

Yes. Open the month from the Marks tab and pick a different photo. The marks live on your iPhone alongside your other decisions, and Erase Rollmark data in Settings clears them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to mark a photo every month?

No. You can skip, and the month stays sorted without a mark. The slot stays dashed until you pick one.

Where are marks stored?

On your iPhone only, by photo id. They are not uploaded, and there is no account to sync them to.

Does marking a photo protect it from deletion?

A marked photo is kept in Rollmark's lists, and Rollmark never deletes on its own. Anything you let go moves to Recently Deleted only after your confirmation.

Can I change a mark later?

Yes. A month holds one mark, so marking a different photo in that month replaces the earlier one. A marked photo is always counted as kept.
