Hide photos on iPhone instead of deleting them
To hide a photo, open it, tap the three-dot menu, choose Hide and confirm. It moves to the Hidden album under Utilities, which you can lock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Hiding keeps the file and its storage cost, so it clears your view, not your space.

How do I hide a photo?
The photo disappears from the main library, from search results for most views and from the Photos widgets and slideshows that draw on the library.
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Tap the three-dot button.
- Choose Hide, then confirm Hide Photo.
- To hide several, tap Select first, pick the photos, then tap the three-dot menu and Hide.
Where do hidden photos go?
They go to the Hidden album. Open Albums, scroll to Utilities and tap Hidden. On iOS 16 and later this album is locked by default, and iOS asks for Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open it. You can also turn the album's visibility off: in Settings, Photos, the Show Hidden Album switch decides whether the album appears under Utilities at all.
How do I unhide a photo?
The photo returns to its original place in the date order.
- Open Albums, Utilities, Hidden and open the album with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Open the photo, or tap Select and pick several.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Unhide.
Hide or delete: which fits?
The answer depends on whether you want to forget the photo or to keep it out of sight. Hiding suits a photo you are not ready to lose but do not want to scroll past. Deleting suits a photo you have no need for.
| Goal | Hide | Delete |
|---|---|---|
| Free storage | No, the file stays | Yes, after 30 days in Recently Deleted |
| Keep a private photo off the grid | Yes | Not needed |
| Remove a bad shot for good | No | Yes |
| Undo easily | Yes, unhide in two taps | Yes for 30 days, then no |
| Stop it in Memories and widgets | Yes | Yes |
Is a hidden photo private?
It is less visible, not encrypted separately. The album is behind your device lock, which helps on a shared phone. The photo still exists in your library and still syncs with iCloud Photos if that is on. If you share your phone's passcode, the hidden album is open too. For anything sensitive, think about where the photo is backed up and who can open that backup.
Does hiding free space?
No. A hidden photo is the same size as before and sits in the same library. If space is the goal, the useful moves are removing large videos, clearing screenshots and merging copies. The guide on why storage stays full after deleting photos explains where space hides.
Where does Rollmark stand on hiding?
Rollmark, an iPhone app in development, does not hide photos. A swipe keeps a photo, lets it go or marks it as the best of its month. The let-go list holds photos until you review them, and only then does iOS ask for confirmation to move them to Recently Deleted. If you want a photo out of your way without deleting it, hide it in Photos and sort the rest. See the swipe deck page.
When should I stop using Hide?
When the hidden album turns into a second camera roll. A hidden photo you never open is storage you pay for. Once a quarter, open the album and decide again on each item: keep, unhide, or delete. A short second look is usually enough to settle most of them.
A photo vanished. Did I hide it?
Check three places. First, the Hidden album under Utilities, which asks for your face or passcode. Second, Recently Deleted, which lists the days left on each item. Third, Search, where you can type the date or a word that describes the picture. If Hidden does not show under Utilities, the Show Hidden Album switch in Settings, Photos may be off, so turn it on and look again.
Will other apps see hidden photos?
Most apps that use the standard photo picker do not list hidden photos, since they are removed from the main library view. That is a convenience, not a guarantee. An app that has been given full access to your library can read more than the picker shows. Review which apps hold Photos permission in Settings, Privacy and Security, Photos.
What are the alternatives for private material?
A locked note keeps text and attached images behind a passcode or Face ID, and it suits a few important items such as a document scan. Another option is to keep sensitive files off the phone in an encrypted folder on a computer. None of these is perfect, and each has a cost in convenience. Pick the one you will actually use.
Hide, Recently Deleted and the lock
Both the Hidden and Recently Deleted albums use the same lock on iOS 16 and later. They protect against a person who picks up your phone with the screen already on. They do not protect against someone who knows your passcode. Treat the lock as a courtesy, not a vault.
Does Hide change the date or the edits?
No. A hidden photo keeps its date, edits, captions and favorite status. When you unhide it, it returns to the same spot in the timeline. Hide is a move between views of your library, so nothing about the photo itself changes.
Can I hide photos on a child's phone?
The Hidden album is a personal convenience and does not replace parental controls. If you manage a child's device through Family Sharing, use Screen Time and content settings for what the child can see. Hiding a photo is still useful for moving a picture out of sight without losing it, but it does not stop someone who has the passcode.
